Barriers to the Utilization of Business Intelligence in Agricultural Production Cooperatives in Kermanshah County

Abstract

Rapid global transformations and the transition from traditional societies to information-based societies have compelled organizations to adopt new strategies in order to optimally exploit emerging opportunities and values. Business intelligence was recognized as a modern organizational strategy that facilitated decision-makers’ access to relevant information and supported evidence-based management. Agricultural production cooperatives, as productive economic entities, required such capabilities to analyze environmental information and data related to production, sales, and marketing in order to enhance effectiveness and competitiveness. However, effective utilization of business intelligence first required the identification of the barriers that impeded its implementation. Accordingly, the present study aimed to identify the barriers to the utilization of business intelligence in agricultural production cooperatives in Kermanshah County. The study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive–analytical method. The study population consisted of managers and members of agricultural production cooperatives in Kermanshah County (N = 127), from whom 30 participants were purposively selected. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that managerial and business intelligence governance weaknesses, financial and economic constraints, low levels of structural and organizational maturity, and deficiencies in technological infrastructure were the most significant barriers to business intelligence utilization in agricultural production cooperatives. The results suggested that addressing these barriers facilitated more effective utilization of business intelligence systems, improved decision-making processes, enhanced organizational performance, and strengthened competitive advantage in the market.
